The Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has sought a seven-day remand for Md Nazrul Islam, general secretary of Satkhira Thana Awami League, for questioning in connection with the murder of Rumiz Uddin Ahmed Rup during the July Uprising.
The remand application was submitted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
According to the application, Nazrul was arrested in a murder case linked to attacks on students and members of the public in the Hatirjheel area during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Investigators told the court that his interrogation was necessary to identify and arrest other absconding suspects, recover the weapons used in the incident and establish the full circumstances surrounding the killing. They therefore sought a seven-day police remand.
According to the case statement, Ramiz Uddin Roop, 21, son of complainant A K M Rokibul Ahmed, left his home on 24 August 2024 to take part in the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
At around 4pm, while demonstrations were taking place in the Karwan Bazar area, accused persons named in the first information report (FIR), along with unidentified individuals, allegedly attacked protesters using firearms, locally made weapons and explosive devices.
Investigators said Rup was struck in the right eye by a bullet fired during the attack. After he fell to the ground, he was allegedly assaulted with iron rods, hockey sticks and other objects before being left on the road.
Fellow protesters and classmates later rescued him and took him first to Padma Hospital in Kathalbagan and then to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 6pm.
Nazrul Islam was arrested by the DB from a residence in the Bashundhara Residential Area of the capital at around 12pm on Sunday.
