The Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, in coordination with Kafrul Police, has arrested seven people in connection with the murder of Md Yusuf, a Jubo Dal activist, in Kafrul.
The shooting occurred at around 11:10pm on 24 July near the Link Road beside Opex Garments. Local residents rescued the victims and rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where the attending physician pronounced Yusuf dead. The other two victims remain under hospital treatment. The other two victims were a vegetable seller named Nalam Sardar and Md Monir Hossain.
One suspect, Abir Howlader, was caught by local residents while trying to flee and was handed over to police. Officers recovered a foreign-made pistol and four rounds of ammunition from his possession. A murder case was later filed by Yusuf’s elder brother.
Following the filing of the murder case, the Detective Branch (DB) and Kafrul Police launched a series of raids, arresting Md Nahid Hasan (21), Md Shafin Ahmed (22), Md Ziarul Molla (39), Md Ali Hossain (45), Md Jihad Molla (30), Md Masum Billah (28), and Md Abir Howlader (25).
According to DB, preliminary interrogation revealed that the primary mastermind, Hafizur Rahman Hafiz, alias “CNG Hafiz,” hired professional assassins to kill his rival, Hafizul Islam Babu.
Investigators said the group first attempted the killing on 29 June, but the plan was abandoned after one of the pistols misfired while being loaded. Before returning to their home districts, the suspects allegedly received an advance payment of Tk50,000 and identified Babu’s office.
The suspects allegedly returned to Dhaka on 22 July to carry out the attack. On 23 July, they were supplied with two loaded pistols, while other members were assigned surveillance, reconnaissance, getaway assistance, and monitoring police movements.
On the night of 24 July, Hafizul Islam Babu became suspicious of the group and attempted to search them while standing outside his office with supporters. During the confrontation, one of the suspects allegedly opened fire, fatally shooting Md Yusuf instead.
Police said legal proceedings against the arrested individuals are underway.
