Public curiosity has intensified over the wealth of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal after a tribunal ordered the government to confiscate their assets and distribute the proceeds among victims of the July uprising.
On Monday, a three-member tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder sentenced Hasina and Kamal to death for crimes against humanity committed last year. The court also directed that a copy of the verdict be sent to the Dhaka district administration for necessary action.
Details of their wealth largely come from affidavits they submitted to the Election Commission for the 2024 national parliamentary elections.
Assets of Sheikh Hasina
According to her affidavit, Sheikh Hasina declared Tk4.34 crore in movable and immovable assets in her own name. This included: Cash Tk28,500, bank deposits nearly Tk2.39 crore, savings certificates Tk25 lakh, fixed deposits (FDR) Tk55 lakh, motor vehicles three in total, with two valued at Tk47.5 lakh, gold and precious metals Tk13.25 lakh and furniture Tk7.40 lakh.
She also listed ownership of 15.3 bighas of agricultural land in Tungipara, Gopalganj Sadar, Gazipur, and Rangpur, purchased for Tk6.78 lakh.
Hasina and her family own a house in Telirchala, Mouchak, Gazipur, originally registered in the name of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman around 1970. Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana inherited the land and later transferred portions to their children. The land measures 297 decimals (9 bighas).
Her affidavit additionally lists a Purbachal plot valued at Tk34.76 lakh. When she served as prime minister, 10-katha plots in Purbachal were allocated to her, her son Sajeeb Wazed, daughter Saima Wazed, sister Sheikh Rehana, and Rehana’s children—a matter the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) claims involved abuse of power.
She also owns a three-storied building on 6.10 decimals of land in Tungipara, valued at Tk5 lakh at the time of purchase.
In May, the ACC reported that although Hasina declared 6.50 acres of land in her 2008 election affidavit, she actually owns more than 28 acres and 41 decimals.
Her historic home at Dhanmondi 32 is currently under the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust. Her private residence, Sudha Sadan, is owned by her children Sajeeb and Saima Wazed.
Assets of Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal
According to his affidavit, Kamal declared Tk10.25 crore in assets, excluding the value of 10 bhori of gold. His declared holdings include: Cash over Tk84 lakh, bank deposits around Tk82 lakh, bonds and shares approximately Tk24 lakh, postal savings, savings certificates, FDRs Tk2.01 crore. motor vehicles valued at Tk1.61 crore, electronics and furniture Tk2 lakh, business capital Tk2.20 crore, reportedly obtained through loans and gold 10 bhori (value not stated).
Kamal also owns 171 decimals (over 5 bighas) of agricultural land valued at Tk1.06 crore, and 18.5 decimals of non-agricultural land valued at Tk58.5 lakh. He declared a rural home valued at Tk 80 lakh and another property worth about Tk13 lakh.
According to the ACC, Kamal accumulated Tk16.42 crore in wealth that is disproportionate to his known sources of income.
