Once home to six to seven cinema halls in the 1990s, the district town of Cumilla gradually witnessed the decline of its big-screen culture, with functional theatres becoming scarce across the entire district. Despite earlier announcements from Star Cineplex about opening a branch in the district, the plan has yet to materialise.
However, this Eid, cinema lovers in the historic town are set to welcome a new addition to their entertainment landscape with the inauguration of ‘Kscreen Cineplex’. The Cineplex has been built under the leadership of producer and exhibitor Khorshed Alam Khosru.
Located on the eighth floor of Gomoti Shopping Centre in the Cantonment Board area of the city, the facility features two screens with seating capacities of 200 and 250, respectively. The venue is equipped with 8:1 sound technology and Digital Cinema Package (DCP) projection, aiming to provide a modern, immersive viewing experience. A food court has also been incorporated within the premises to enhance audience convenience.
The project has been implemented with an investment of approximately Tk 5.5 crore.
Speaking about the initiative, Khosru said he has maintained a long-standing engagement with cinema, having worked in film production and direction for over two decades. He has also been involved in the management of several cinema halls in the past.
Drawing from that experience, he noted that contemporary audiences are no longer interested in watching films in dilapidated, outdated theatres and instead expect upgraded facilities comparable to modern multiplex standards.
He further informed that ticket prices will be aligned with prevailing rates at other Cineplexes across the country. In terms of programming strategy, the management intends to prioritise domestic films in its screening schedule.
Industry observers believe the launch of the new cineplex could play a catalytic role in reviving cinema-going culture in Comilla, particularly during festive releases, while also providing a structured exhibition platform for local filmmakers.
