Croatia took a 1-0 lead into half-time against Ghana on Sunday and moved to the top of Group L as things stood in their final FIFA World Cup group match.
Petar Sucic gave Croatia the lead after 30 minutes with a superb strike from around 25 yards. Zlatko Dalic’s side controlled much of the first half and created the better chances as they looked set to book their place in the round of 32.
Croatia enjoyed slightly more possession and kept Ghana under pressure for long spells. Luka Modric dictated play in midfield while the Croatian attack regularly tested the Ghana defence.
Ghana struggled to threaten for most of the opening half. Their first shot came only after 40 minutes when Antoine Semenyo burst into the box but dragged his effort just wide of the far post.
The result, combined with England’s 0-0 draw against Panama at half-time, lifted Croatia to the top of Group L on six points. England were second on five points, while Ghana dropped to third despite already securing qualification for the knockout stage.
Croatia only need a draw to reach the round of 32, but if both scores remain unchanged after the break, they will finish as Group L winners.
