The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on Bangladeshi authorities to immediately cease the harassment of independent journalist Tanbirul Miraj Ripon and end the practice of deploying intelligence personnel to question members of the press.
CPJ made the call in a Facebook post on Thursday.
On 30 March, Ripon, who reports for international outlets including The Economist and Sky News, was summoned by the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) in Cox’s Bazar.

During a 30-minute interrogation, an officer questioned Ripon regarding his family and informed him that he may be required to report to the office again.
Kunal Majumder, CPJ’s Asia-Pacific program coordinator, stated that journalists should not be summoned by intelligence agencies or interrogated about their private lives for simply performing their professional duties.
“These actions undermine press freedom,” Majumder said, urging authorities to stop using intelligence agencies to question media professionals.
