Police have temporarily suspended one of its members accused in an incident where a video of a financial transaction between a police member and a lawyer inside the lock-up of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court in Dhaka spread on social media. The police member’s name is Mir Mosharraf Hossain.
The matter was confirmed on Monday by Deputy Police Commissioner of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Prosecution Division, Mia Mohammad Ashish Bin Hasan.
He said immediate action has been taken against the accused police member after preliminary verification of the allegation and video evidence.
Court sources said content creator RS Fahim Chowdhury was produced in court in an attempted murder case filed at Mohammadpur Police Station related to the anti-discrimination movement. After the hearing, the court ordered him to be shown arrested and sent to jail.
On the day, when he was being taken to the court lock-up, a video was secretly recorded of a financial transaction between a police member on duty inside and a lawyer, which later spread on social media. Police and eyewitnesses claim the financial transaction was attempted to secure “special facilities” for Fahim in the case.
However, accused police member Mir Mosharraf Hossain denied the allegation, saying the lawyer was trying to force money on him so that he could deliver food to the accused. He claims he did not accept any money and that the matter has been misrepresented.
The identity of the concerned lawyer could not be immediately confirmed.
General Secretary of the Dhaka Bar Association, Syed Nazrul Islam, said, “Whoever commits a crime, action must be taken against them. Whether they are a police officer, a lawyer, or anyone else.”
Regarding the matter, DMP Deputy Police Commissioner Mia Mohammad Ashish Bin Hasan said, “We took action as soon as we received the complaint and video footage. The matter will be investigated and necessary legal action will be taken.”
