A college student was stabbed to death in Alfadanga upazila of Faridpur on Friday evening over a long-standing dispute between rival groups.
The deceased was identified as Sumon Sheikh, a third-year student of MA Khalek Degree College and son of Alauddin Sheikh of Borobhag Eastpara village.
Officer-in-Charge of Alfadanga Police Station Fakir Taijur Rahman said there had been ongoing tension between two groups of villagers over establishing local dominance.
According to police, the incident occurred around 6pm on Friday when Hossain Sheikh, son of former Union Parishad member Kuddus Sheikh, allegedly intercepted Sumon in front of Ukil Sheikh’s house while he was travelling through the area on a motorcycle.
At one stage, Hossain and his associates allegedly attacked Sumon with sharp weapons, leaving him critically injured.
Locals rushed him to Kashiani Upazila Health Complex. He was later transferred to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, tension has spread in the area.
Additional police have been deployed to maintain law and order and prevent any further unrest.
