Lionel Messi provided an assist as Inter Miami were held to a 2-2 draw by Atlanta United in MLS on Sunday.

Messi helped Miami take the lead in the 32nd minute. The Argentine delivered a corner into the box and Casemiro rose to power a header into the top corner.

Atlanta needed only four minutes to respond. Miguel Almiron took advantage of a defensive mistake and finished with his right foot to make it 1-1.

Inter Miami regained the lead just before half time. Telasco Segovia set up Luis Suarez, who calmly finished from the centre of the box in first half stoppage time.

Miami went into the break with a 2-1 lead.

Atlanta increased the pressure after the restart as they searched for another equaliser. Miami looked to control possession, with Messi regularly moving into central areas to create opportunities.

Atlanta earned a penalty in the 72nd minute after the referee reviewed an incident involving Casemiro inside the box.

Breel Embolo converted the penalty to make it 2-2.

Neither side could find a winner in the remaining minutes as the match ended level.

The game had earlier been delayed because of a thunderstorm near the stadium.

Inter Miami entered the match after a 7-1 win over CF Montreal, where Messi scored four goals and provided one assist.
