Britain’s Prince William will attend the funeral of Norway’s late King Harald on 9 September, representing his father King Charles III, Buckingham Palace said Saturday.
The heir to the throne previously stood in for the monarch at Pope Francis’s funeral last year. By protocol, British sovereigns do not attend funerals of other heads of state, delegating senior royals instead, reports AFP.
Charles, 77, who is undergoing treatment for an undisclosed cancer while maintaining a full schedule, last week mourned the loss of his “dear cousin” Harald. The two were second cousins once removed, both descended from King Edward VII.
Princess Anne will also attend in a personal capacity as godmother to Norway’s new king, Haakon VIII.
