Colombian pop star Karol G has revealed she has been cautioned not to use the phrase “ICE out” on stage, as doing so could put her US visa at risk.
The singer is set to make history as the first Latina artist to headline the Coachella Festival in California later this month. In an interview with Playboy, Karol said she wants to use her platform to address social issues, particularly the actions of US immigration authorities, but is aware of the potential consequences.
“People will say, ‘It’s better you don’t… Because if you say the thing, maybe the next day you’ll get a call: ‘Hey, we are taking your visa away’,” she explained. Karol added that while her team advised against it, she does not want fear to stop her from speaking her mind.
“I want to represent my community and have my comments carry meaning,” she said, emphasising that any statement she makes would be carefully considered and sincere.
Karol will close out both Sundays of the three-day festival in Indio, which runs across two weekends in April, 10-12 and 17-19. Other headliners include Sabrina Carpenter and Justin Bieber.
She previously made history with her fourth album ‘Mañana Será Bonito’, the first all-Spanish album by a female artist to reach Number One on the Billboard 200, and as the first Latin female artist to headline Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago.
