The government will import 18 cargoes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from France-based energy company TotalEnergies over nine months, with two cargoes scheduled to arrive each month from October 2026 to June 2027.
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) on Wednesday approved the proposal in principle under the direct procurement method to meet the country’s emergency gas demand.
The decision was taken at a CCEA meeting at the Cabinet Division in Dhaka, chaired by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.
Under the proposed arrangement, Bangladesh will receive two LNG cargoes every month during the nine-month period.
The government may also purchase additional cargoes from TotalEnergies if required, subject to mutual agreement between the two sides. The Energy and Mineral Resources Division placed the proposal before the committee.
The decision to procure LNG directly comes amid an uncertain geopolitical situation and growing concerns over energy security arising from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
The imports are intended to help ensure adequate gas supplies as the country faces emergency energy needs, according to the proposal.
