Police have arrested an accused in a case filed over the recovery of a madrasa student’s hanging body at Banasree in Dhaka’s Rampura.
The arrestee, Md Shihab, 18, son of Abdul Matin of Bera upazila in Pabna, was a student of the same madrasa.
Montaz Ali, sub‑inspector of Bera Model Police Station said a team led by SI Ekramul Haque of Rampura police conducted the raid in Bera.
Shihab, who had fled the madrasa and was hiding in Tangail, was arrested at the Bera CNB bus stand around 6pm Wednesday with assistance from Bera police.
SI Ekramul said the madrasa authorities filed a case against Shihab on Wednesday, leading to his arrest. Preliminary suspicion is that Abdullah, 10, was sexually assaulted and, unable to bear the humiliation, took his own life.
Shihab faces similar allegations from other students and is now being interrogated, he added.
Around 11:30pm on Tuesday, police recovered Abdullah’s body from the third‑floor bathroom of the madrasa, with a towel wrapped around his neck.
Madrasa principal Abdullah Al Mamun said Abdullah was the madrasa’s first student and lived in the residential section. After Maghrib prayers Tuesday, he went to the bathroom and did not return.
He added, teachers broke open the door and found his body, then informed police through the emergency hotline.
Asked about allegations of sexual assault, the principal said some students mentioned suspicious matters about Shihab, who had left the madrasa on leave earlier that evening.
