A five-year-old boy drowned in a pond in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Thursday after his family left him at home and went to cast their votes.
The deceased, Hasan, was the son of Israil Hossain of Shaikh Para village.
The incident occurred in the Gorosthan Para area of Alamdanga upazila.
Family members said Israil’s wife had come to her father’s home with her twin sons, Hasan and Hossain, to visit and cast her vote.
On Thursday morning, all family members left the two children at home and went to a nearby polling centre to vote. About an hour later, after returning home, the mother found Hasan missing and began searching for him.
At one stage, neighbours spotted the child’s body floating in a pond beside the house. He was quickly rescued and taken to Alamdanga Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
The death of one of the twins has plunged the family into grief. What began as a day of voting turned into tragedy, casting a pall of mourning over the area.
Officer-in-Charge of Alamdanga Police Station, Bani Israel, confirmed the incident.
