A tribunal has sentenced two men to life imprisonment in a case over the abduction and murder of 11‑year‑old Shafiqul Islam Milon in Dhaka’s Kafrul.

The convicts are Al Amin Gharami and Masud Rana. Another accused, Saiful Islam alias Chhoto Saiful, was handed a 14‑year jail term, while Md Abdul Motleb and Amirul Islam were acquitted as charges against them were not proven. Each convict was fined Tk1 lakh, in default of which they will serve one more year.

Judge Munshi Md Mashiur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal‑4 delivered the verdict Sunday, said Prosecutor Md Ershad Alam.

Convict Masud was present in court and sent to jail after the judgment. Additionally, arrest warrants were issued against the two absconding convicts, the prosecutor added.

According to case documents, Shafiqul went missing on 6 March 2008 from North Senpara in Kafrul. After failing to secure ransom, the abductors strangled him to death and dumped the body in Ramchandrapur, Savar, on 8 March. His father, Shahidul Islam, filed the case.

Police submitted a charge sheet on 23 May 2008. After 18 years of trial proceedings, the tribunal announced the verdict based on testimonies of nine witnesses and DNA evidence.
