Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain has called for a judicial investigation into the violent clashes between students of Chittagong University (CU) and residents of Jobra village in Hathazari.
The mayor visited the injured students at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Sunday evening and inquired their condition.
“Violence in an educational institution is never acceptable,” Mayor Shahadat said while speaking to reporters at the hospital. “The attack on university students by locals is deeply regrettable and alarming. A neutral judicial investigation is essential to identify the real perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
He also urged strict action against those disrupting the academic environment and instigating violence. “Chittagong University is a key institution of higher education in our country. Repeated incidents of violence here not only endanger students’ futures but also harm the entire society,” he added. “The government and administration must act decisively.”

At least 150 people, including CU’s Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md Kamal Uddin, and Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Hayder Arif, were injured in the violence.
In response to the escalating tension, the local administration imposed Section 144 around 3pm, banning public gatherings on both sides of the road stretching from Gate No. 2 of CU to the eastern rail gate in the Fatehpur Union area, according to Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Abdullah Al Mumin.
Following violent clashes between students and local residents, joint forces have been deployed in and around Chittagong University (CU) around 4pm on Sunday.
Several medical and political leaders accompanied the mayor during his hospital visit, including Dr Md Jasim Uddin, president of DAB’s CMCH unit; Dr Tamiz Uddin Ahmed Manik, president of DAB Chattogram district unit; Dr. Abbas Uddin, president of DAB’s metropolitan unit; Premier University Vice-Chancellor Dr Nasrul Kadir; former BNP health affairs secretary Dr SM Sarwar Alam and Chattogram Metropolitan BNP Joint Convenor MA Aziz
