Transport workers in Naogaon have halted all long‑distance bus services to Dhaka, Bogura, Chattogram, Sylhet and other routes after a driver was allegedly assaulted.
The sudden stoppage, announced without prior notice, has left passengers stranded.
From around 9am Tuesday, workers blocked the road with barricades near Dhaka Bus Stand in the town, halting traffic.
Protesters said an Ekota Paribahan bus from Dhaka arrived at the stand around 1:30am. Several young men at a tea stall allegedly attacked the driver after passengers were dropped off. Later, when the bus was taken to the counter, they also attempted to vandalise it.
In protest, workers suspended bus operations, saying the blockade will continue until action is taken against the attackers.
Habibur Rahman, waiting to travel to Gaibandha, said, “I took leave early to go home for Eid‑ul‑Adha. Now I see buses are stopped.”
Another passenger, Munira Akter, said, “I had urgent work in Dhaka. At the counter I was told buses won’t run. I needed to reach on time, now I don’t know how.”
Naogaon District Bus Owners’ Association General Secretary Rafiqul Islam Chowdhury said, “Staff of the Ekota bus counter were assaulted. We will investigate the incident and inform details after the probe.”
Mohammad Asaduzzaman, officer‑in‑charge of Sadar Model Police Station, said discussions are underway to restore bus services.
