The bodies of two workers who went missing after a bulkhead sank in the Buriganga River in Narayanganj’s Fatullah have been recovered.
Rescue teams recovered the bodies of Mohammad Zahurul Islam Shakil, 25, and Hasan, 20, on Friday afternoon. Both were crew members of the sand-laden bulkhead that sank after being hit by a passenger launch.
The accident occurred around 6am in the Dharmaganj area of Fatullah police station when the bulkhead, MB Kashfa Sneha, was anchored along the eastern bank of the Buriganga.
A passenger launch named Sundarban-16, travelling from Barishal, rammed the bulkhead from behind amid dense fog.
Additional DIG of Narayanganj River Police Md Alamgir Hossain said the bulkhead sank immediately after the collision. Five workers were sleeping inside at the time.
Three managed to swim ashore, while Zahurul Islam Shakil and Hasan went missing.
Upon receiving the information, teams from Pagla River Police, the Coast Guard, and Fire Service divers launched a rescue operation. They recovered both bodies later in the afternoon.
Shakil hailed from Patuakhali district, while Hasan was a resident of Rajapur upazila in Jhalakathi district.
Following the recovery, grief-stricken relatives gathered along the riverbank, as the area turned heavy with mourning.
