Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) are set to stage a protest on campus at 4pm on Tuesday under the banner of the “Red Card Programme,” aimed at opposing the existing diploma quota system in engineering education and what they term its continued misuse.
Organised by the Prokousholi Odhikar Andolon (Engineers’ Rights Movement), the protest comes as part of the group’s ongoing three-point demand campaign, which has been active despite what organisers describe as “relentless obstacles.”
In a statement, the group reaffirmed its unwavering stance, saying: “Despite facing numerous hurdles, the Engineers’ Rights Movement has not deviated by even an inch from its three-point demand nor will it. This movement will continue until those demands are fulfilled.”
As part of today’s programme, students will symbolically issue red cards in protest against the diploma quota and its alleged abuse, highlighting how the system, originally intended to benefit technical diploma holders, is now undermining merit and transparency in engineering admissions and recruitment.
Organisers said the demonstration will specifically expose irregularities tied to the diploma quota and call for structural reforms to ensure fairness in access to engineering institutions and professions.
