BRAC University on Thursday organised a workshop to give students practical exposure to literary translation at its campus in the capital.
The programme, titled “Translation Workshop by Jackie Kabir”, brought together aspiring translators and literature enthusiasts for an interactive discussion on the art and craft of translation.
The Department of English and Humanities arranged the session for students of ENG 465 Translation Studies Spring 2026, according to a press release.
Drawing on her experience, writer and translator Jackie Kabir spoke about translating literary texts between Bangla and English and shared insights into real-world translation practice.
She also introduced key translation strategies and guided participants through hands-on exercises drawn from her latest anthology, Crimson Letters.
The session was coordinated by course instructor and BRAC University Associate Professor of English and Humanities Sabreena Ahmed.
She emphasised the importance of linking theory with practice in translation studies.
Jackie Kabir has made contributions to literary translation in Bangladesh and abroad. Her works include the acclaimed short story collection Silent Noise, which is now part of undergraduate curricula in Tamil Nadu.
Her work also includes a Bengali translation of Ngũgĩ wa Thiong’o’s Between the Rivers.
Beyond books, she has contributed to a range of anthologies and journals, including entries in The Literary Encyclopedia and publications by the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh.
The workshop reflects BRAC University’s continued focus on strengthening critical literary skills and nurturing the next generation of translators, writers and scholars.
