The Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University (BOU), Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiquur Rahman Khan, on Sunday, 5 July 2026, paid tribute to retired Dhaka University Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq at the Central Shaheed Minar premises in Dhaka, according to a press release said.
Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq, retired professor of the Department of Bengali at Dhaka University, died on 05 July 2026 at a hospital in the capital at the age of 86, the release said. The tribute was held on 06 July 2026 at 11am, when the BOU Vice Chancellor placed floral wreaths on his coffin, which was kept at the Central Shaheed Minar for state honours.
The press release said Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq was an internationally renowned academic, essayist, writer and researcher, whose contributions to education, literature, research and social thought were widely recognised.
Speaking to journalists and well-wishers after paying homage, Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiquur Rahman Khan described him as a dedicated teacher, intellectual and visionary thinker whose work would continue to inspire future generations. He said the late academic’s writings and ideas were rooted in values and commitment to societal progress.
He added that he had maintained an association with Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq for nearly 35 years and last met him on 28 June at Dhaka University, where the late professor had expressed interest in visiting Bangladesh Open University. He said the wish remained unfulfilled due to his death.
The Vice Chancellor further noted that discussions with the late academic consistently focused on national progress and social transformation rather than personal matters, adding that he remained committed to his ideals throughout his life despite challenges.
Professor Dr Mohammad Siddiquur Rahman Khan prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and expressed condolences to the bereaved family, colleagues, admirers and well-wishers. He also urged all to uphold the ideals and values of the late professor in service of the nation.
