BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has called on the Election Commission (EC) to ensure a fair and transparent resolution to the ongoing postal ballot controversy.
Speaking at a memorial and prayer gathering at Chattogram Maa-O-Shishu Hospital for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Thursday, Amir Khosru said the Commission must clarify why the BNP election symbol, the ‘Sheaf of Paddy,’ appeared in the folded section of the ballot papers.
“Those responsible for printing the ballots are best placed to answer, and the Commission should ensure corrective measures to prevent such issues in the future,” he added.
Highlighting the party’s commitment to free and fair elections, he said, “For the past 20 years, the people of the country have been denied the right to vote and elect their representatives. Citizens are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to participate in elections.”
On candidate security, Amir Khosru said any threats must be addressed by the government and law enforcement agencies, adding that BNP would cooperate if asked.
He stressed the public’s desire for a functioning democracy, noting that a fair election would ensure a government accountable to the people and restore citizens’ rights.
Amir Khosru also paid tribute to party chairperson Khaleda Zia, saying she never compromised on democratic principles and consistently fought for the rights of ordinary citizens.
He noted that the massive public response to her passing is unprecedented in Bangladesh’s history and among the largest globally.
