Rezaul Kaiyum, president of BNP’s Adarsha Sadar upazila unit in Cumilla, was released from police custody 12 hours after his detention.

He was picked up by Kotwali police around 12am on Monday for interrogation, said Officer-in-charge Touhidul Anwar.

Police said Rezaul was brought in for questioning over certain allegations and was released after interrogation as no charges were proven and no case was filed against him.

A team of Kotwali police and detectives detained him around 12pm on Sunday from his residence in Shashongacha area.

His detention triggered protests by supporters, who put blockade at Shashongacha Bus Terminal and demonstrated outside the police station, demanding his release.

According to the police sources, Rezaul was under discussion over allegations of collecting tolls at Shashongacha Bus Terminal. Police detained him after receiving high‑level government instructions. However, he was released 12 hours after clearance from senior authorities, the sources said.
