Leaders from five political parties of the allied coalition, which was part of the movement against the deposed Awami League government, have met with BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
During the meeting, they demanded the withdrawal of BNP’s independent or rebel candidates from the constituencies that have been allocated to the coalition’s candidates. Tarique assured at the time that he will be looking into the matter.
This information was confirmed by sources from within the meeting.
On Monday afternoon, leaders of Nagarik Oikya, Ganosamhati Andolon, Labor Party, Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam, and AB Party held separate meetings at the chairperson’s office in Gulshan. The meeting discussed the country’s current political situation, law and order, the national election, and the situation of the constituencies that have been allocated to the coalition’s candidates.
Among the coalition partner parties, President of Nagarik Oikya Mahmudur Rahman Manna, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolon Zonayed Saki, President of AB Party Mujibur Rahman Manju, Chairman of Labor Party Mostafizur Rahman Iran, and Vice President of Jamiat-e-Ulama-e-Islam Maulana Junaid Al Habib led their respective delegations. Before this, they signed the condolence book in memory of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia.
Among the coalition partners, Mahmudur Rahman Manna in Bogura-2 constituency, Maulana Junaid Al Habib in Brahmanbaria-2 constituency, and Zonayed Saki in Brahmanbaria-6 constituency are contesting in the election in understanding with BNP.
However, although Mahmudur Rahman Manna’s nomination paper was cancelled in Bogura-2 constituency, his nomination paper was not cancelled in Dhaka-18 constituency. If his appeal is granted, he will get back the nomination for Bogura-2 constituency.
In that case, it is not yet known whether he will contest in the Bogura or the Dhaka constituency.
Meanwhile, another candidate from the coalition, on condition of anonymity, said, “We have demanded the withdrawal of BNP’s sheaf of paddy candidates and BNP-affiliated independent or rebel candidates from those constituencies that have been allocated to our partners. Tarique Rahman has informed that our demand will be given importance.”
That leader also stated that action has already been initiated against independent candidates.
