Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has foiled fresh attempts by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) to push seven people into Bangladesh through border points in Meherpur and Lalmonirhat, amid growing concern over a series of recent push-in incidents along the frontier.
The latest attempts took place early Friday through the Buripota border in Meherpur and the Kalirhat border in Lalmonirhat. BGB members took a firm position and prevented the individuals from entering Bangladesh.
At the Khalpara area under Buripota BOP in Meherpur Sadar upazila, near international border pillar 116, BSF allegedly tried to push four people into Bangladesh. Local residents first spotted the group moving suspiciously inside Indian territory before dawn and informed BGB.
After receiving the information, BGB members rushed to the area, strengthened surveillance and took precautionary positions along the border. As a result, the four individuals failed to enter Bangladesh and were left stranded near the zero line.
Local sources said the group consisted of one man and three women. However, their identities, nationality and place of origin could not be confirmed. It also remains unclear where they moved after BGB intervened.
Villagers joined BGB in monitoring the border area amid fears of further push-in attempts. Reports said the opposite side of the border falls under the Natna BSF camp in Nadia district’s Tehatta police station area in India’s West Bengal. Locals suspect the four individuals were brought to the border from that jurisdiction.
Meanwhile, BSF also attempted to push three people into Bangladesh through the Kalirhat border in Patgram upazila of Lalmonirhat. However, BGB personnel blocked the attempt and prevented their entry.
In response to the incidents, BGB intensified patrols and surveillance along the border. Local residents have also remained alert to help prevent any unauthorised crossings.
BGB Director Lieutenant Colonel Nazmul Hasan confirmed the Meherpur incident. He said BGB had successfully prevented an attempt to push four individuals into Bangladesh through the Khalpara area under Buripota BOP.
He added that BGB would not allow any illegal push-in or intrusion and remains on high alert to safeguard the country’s borders.
