There is a Reddit post on r/Vent that goes like this: “I feel nothing less than an utter failure. I have lost all hope. My relationship is failing; we keep arguing about everything. I am burned out all the time because my boss micromanages so much; it gets on my nerves. I feel I have no one to talk to.”
It is not a private journal entry. It is a post on a public internet forum, addressed to no one in particular and received by thousands.
The same desperation, typed differently, lands in ChatGPT daily. It arrives as a prompt, gets a polished and empathetic response, and the conversation ends when the tab closes. No one upvotes it. No one shares a similar story from 2019. No one tells the person they are wrong.
These are not equivalent experiences. Treating them as such is where most comparisons between Reddit and AI go wrong.
Reddit, as of March 2026, has 127 million daily active users. Making it one of the biggest social media platforms on the internet.
Steve Huffman, co-founder and CEO, said it plainly in an April 2026 interview with CNBC: “People want to hear what other people are saying, including AI. There’s no artificial intelligence without intelligence. The knowledge has to come from somewhere, and Reddit is one of the primary sources for that sort of information that AI craves.”
Reddit is a vast archive of human experience written in real time. It is also a place of spectacular bad advice and mob validation.
On the other hand, ChatGPT has an estimated 900 million weekly users. It does not get tired, does not bring its own problems into yours, and is available at 3:00 am without complaint. The absence of a stake in your outcome is a real advantage. It is also an absence of something harder to name. The machine has processed enormous amounts of text about grief. It has not experienced any of it.
The reason people confide in strangers on Reddit is the same reason people once confided in priests and bartenders. Anonymity dissolves social consequences. You can say the things you cannot say to your partner, your therapist, or your mother.
It is not that people prefer Reddit to be a good friend. It is that a good friend is harder to find, harder to keep, and harder to be honest with when you share a social circle and history. ChatGPT offers a different version of the same escape: intimacy without exposure, clean and sealed, over when you close the window.
Neither is without risk. Reddit’s defenders will tell you that bad information gets corrected in the comments. On technical subreddits with strict moderation, this is often true. Users credit specific threads with solving problems that stump professionals. On emotional and relational questions, the dynamic is less clean. Advice is shaped by whoever happens to be reading at the time, their unresolved histories, their need to feel useful. The person telling you to leave your relationship may have just left theirs. The person telling you to stay may never have left anything.
AI carries its own version of the problem. It hallucinates, presenting invented facts with the same confident syntax as real ones. On emotional matters, the issue is subtler: it will not fabricate your situation, but it will mirror it back in a way that is reassuring regardless of whether the reassurance is warranted. It agrees more than it should. It challenges less than it could.
One platform confirms your fears through human bias. The other does it through algorithmic compliance. The mechanism differs. The result is sometimes the same.
Neither platform is primarily used for information retrieval, despite what their architects might prefer to believe. The dominant use is something closer to witness. People want to be heard, to have someone or something confirm that their situation is real and that others have been where they are.
Reddit offers that through volume. The accumulation of similar stories is its own kind of comfort. ChatGPT offers it through attention. Every sentence is oriented toward the person who typed the prompt. It never wanders.
What neither offers is the sense that the other party actually knows you. Understanding someone’s story is not the same as understanding them. Online, you only ever get the story. That distinction is where both platforms reach their limit. They just reach it in different ways.
