Lieutenant Colonel Rafiqul Alam, commander of Maheshpur-58 Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), said that anti-drug and anti-smuggling operations have been intensified in border areas alongside the performance of election duties.
He shared the information at a press conference on Thursday.
At the press conference, Rafiqul Alam said, “To ensure enhanced security during the 13th National Parliament election, 58 Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) will perform election duties in six parliamentary constituencies across 10 upazilas of Jhenaidah and Magura districts.”
The primary goal of this strategic oversight is to ensure that additional security measures are in place during the national election period.
The commanding officer said that in 2025, a total of 41 people were detained in anti-smuggling operations in border areas, during which goods and narcotics worth more than Tk 38 crore 27 lakh 283 were seized, along with nine pistols and 21 rounds of ammunition.
He said the BGB also carried out several anti-drug drives throughout 2025 in line with the government’s zero-tolerance policy against narcotics, resulting in the seizure of 11,530 bottles of alcohol, 6 kg 405 grams of heroin, 53,474 pieces of Yaba, 14,381 bottles of Phensedyl, 117 kg 453 grams of cannabis, 5 kg 111 grams of cocaine, 114 bottles of beer and 61,235 pieces of various medicines.
The total value of the seized narcotics stood at Tk 9 crore 62 lakh 64 thousand 685, while 28 people were detained in connection with the cases, he added.
The press conference also highlighted BGB’s humanitarian activities, including the organisation of medical camps and the distribution of winter clothing.
Maheshpur-58 BGB Assistant Director Munshi Imdadur Rahman and other members of the battalion were present at the briefing.
According to BGB sources, the force has taken special preparations to strengthen surveillance in both border and internal areas to ensure a peaceful, neutral and fair election.
