The return of Shakib Al Hasan to Bangladesh and consequently to the national side, remains uncertain due to factors beyond the control of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), according to board president Aminul Islam Bulbul.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday after inspecting the venue in Purbachal, BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul addressed the issue. He said, “If Shakib comes to Bangladesh and our selectors feel he is ready to play, then he will play. As for his return, you already know there are several procedural complications, which are not under the jurisdiction of the cricket board.”
The BCB has been attempting to facilitate Shakib’s return for over a month. However, the former captain remains unavailable, having already missed the Pakistan series and now set to sit out the upcoming New Zealand series as well.
Following Saturday’s board meeting, BCB director Iftekhar Rahman Mithu reiterated that Shakib’s situation hinges on the progress of his ongoing legal matters.
Meanwhile, in a recent interview, Shakib spoke about playing for the national team, instability in club cricket, returning to the country, and politics, topics that remained at the centre of discussion throughout yesterday. Later, he clarified his position in a Facebook post.
In the post, Shakib wrote, “Recently, one of my statements in the media has created a lot of discussion. I want to make the matter very clear to everyone. At this moment, my entire focus is only on cricket. At this final stage of my career, I want to give my absolute best for the Bangladesh national team and, if given the opportunity, deliver some great performances for the country.
“For the development of a country, politics is very important. After ending my cricket career, I want to contribute to my country’s development. However, that does not necessarily mean it has to be through politics. It is possible to work for the country outside politics as well. Though, yes, working through politics may make things easier.
“I hope I can end my cricket career with a smile while wearing the red and green jersey. With that goal, I seek prayers and love from all the people of Bangladesh.”
