Shakib Al Hasan is now far from Bangladesh cricket. He is no longer part of the team. He is also not in a position to return to the country because of his political identity.
He was an elected member of the Awami League government, which later fell after a mass uprising. Even before July 2024, Shakib had been living in the United States with his family.
A recent interview has brought him back into public debate. On Monday, leading daily The Daily Star published his comments on politics.
In that interview, Shakib said, “Since our party (Awami League) has no activities now, I am trying to continue playing cricket.”
He added, “When the party resumes its activities or when we are able to do so, I may try to return to politics.”
These comments led to strong reactions from the public. Many people criticised him.
Later that night, at 10:41 pm, Shakib made a post on his verified Facebook page to explain his position.
He wrote, “Assalamu Alaikum everyone, recently one of my statements in the media has created a lot of discussion. I want to clearly explain the matter to everyone. At this moment, my full focus is only on cricket. At this final stage of my career, I want to give my absolute best for the Bangladesh national team and, if given the opportunity, deliver some great performances for the country.”
Shakib also spoke about his goals. He said, “Politics is very important for the development of a country. After ending my cricket career, I want to contribute to my country’s development.”
Shakib made it clear that politics is not the only path. He said, “However, that does not have to be only through politics. t is possible to work for the country outside politics as well. But yes, it may be easier to do those things through politics.”
There have been many talks about his return to Bangladesh. But nothing has happened yet.
Even then, the former captain still has one wish. He said, “I hope I can finish my cricket career wearing the red and green jersey with a smile on my face.”
He added, “For this, I seek prayers and love from all the people of Bangladesh.”
