A Bangladeshi youth was killed after being shot at the Companiganj border area of Sylhet reportedly by members of the Khasi community on the Indian side of the border, according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
The incident took place on Thursday around 8:30pm in the border area of Companiganj upazila.
The matter was confirmed on Friday by the commanding officer of the 48th Battalion of Border Guard Bangladesh Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Haque.
The deceased was identified as Saleh Ahmed Joydhar, 30, a resident of Karbalar Tuk village adjacent to Dayar Bazar in Companiganj upazila.
In a press release, BGB said three Bangladeshi youths-Saleh Ahmed Joydhar, Suman Mia, 25, and Masum Ahmed, 20, illegally crossed into Indian territory allegedly to bring a consignment of drugs.
They reportedly took position near the Chanket and Markan orchard areas along the border.
According to the statement, while they were inside a betel nut plantation, local Khasi residents allegedly opened fire using shotguns after suspecting them of theft.
Saleh Ahmed Joydhar was hit and died on the spot. The two other youths later returned to Bangladesh with the body of the deceased, the BGB added.
