The Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi has temporarily suspended all consular and visa services due to security concerns, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed.
The suspension will remain in effect until further notice.
The decision follows a protest on Saturday night by 20-25 members of the extremist group ‘Akhanda Hindu Rashtra Sena’ outside the High Commission. The protesters reportedly chanted anti-Bangladesh slogans for about 20 minutes and issued threats against Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to India, M Riaz Hamidullah.
Since the incident, the High Commissioner’s family has felt at risk, prompting authorities to suspend visa and consular operations. “The family has expressed concerns about their safety and perceived threats,” Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain told reporters on Sunday.
Tensions between Dhaka and Delhi have been high since the July mass uprising centering the fall of the Awami League government. The recent shooting of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi has further increased tensions between Dhaka and Delhi.
