Bangladesh Bank and Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC held a “Cashless Bangladesh” campaign at Banani Kacha Bazar in Dhaka on Thursday to promote digital payments and raise public awareness of Bangla QR.
Finance and Planning Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury inaugurated the programme as chief guest on 1 October, with Dutch-Bangla Bank Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Md Ahteshamul Haque Khan also attending. The minister made a purchase using Bangla QR through the bank’s app during the campaign, Dutch-Bangla Bank said in a press release. Chowdhury’s name and current finance and planning portfolios are confirmed by the Finance Division.
Chowdhury described Bangla QR as a fully encrypted and secure payment platform and urged people to support the government’s vision of building a “Cashless Bangladesh”.
He said all transactions through Bangla QR under the initiative would be completely free of charge, removing the need for people to carry cash while making payments easier and faster. His remarks on fee-free Bangla QR transactions at the Banani programme were also reported by state news agency BSS on Thursday.
Bangladesh Bank organised the campaign in association with Dutch-Bangla Bank.
Dutch-Bangla Bank said it has been conducting awareness and promotional activities across the country to encourage customers and merchants to use Bangla QR as part of its support for the government’s cashless-payment drive.
Customers can make instant cashless transactions through Bangla QR using Dutch-Bangla Bank’s NexusPay app and Rocket service, according to the release.
The bank said it remained committed to expanding digital-payment adoption and contributing to a more convenient, efficient and cashless payment ecosystem in Bangladesh.
The release was issued by Nazrul Islam, executive vice president and head of Dutch-Bangla Bank’s Public Affairs and Brand Communication Division.
