At least eight people were killed in a collision between a truck and a pickup van at Telibazar in South Surma, Sylhet.
The accident occurred on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway around 6:30am on Sunday.
Several others were injured in the incident. While the immediate identities of the deceased have not been confirmed, most of the victims are reported to be construction workers.
Md Monjurul Alam, additional deputy commissioner (Media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police (SMP), confirmed the details of the tragedy.
According to local sources, a group of workers was travelling from Sylhet towards Sunamganj in a pickup van. Upon reaching the Telibazar area, the vehicle collided with a jackfruit-laden truck coming from the opposite direction. Four people died on the spot, while another four succumbed to their injuries after being taken to the hospital.
The bodies have been moved to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue. The injured have also been admitted to the hospital for treatment. SMP stated that police are currently working to identify the deceased.
