The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court has ruled that there is no legal barrier for BNP candidates to contest three constituencies in the upcoming national election.
However, the apex court ordered that the gazette of voting results for these seats must remain suspended until the ongoing appeals are resolved.
The three BNP candidates are Aslam Chowdhury (Chattogram‑4), Sarwar Alamgir (Chattogram‑2), and Fahim Chowdhury (Sherpur‑2).
A full bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, passed the order on Tuesday.
The order made it clear that the Election Commission cannot publish the official gazette of election results for the three constituencies until the appeal petitions are finally disposed of.
Lawyer Ismail Gani, representing Jamaat‑e‑Islami candidate Muhammad Nurul Amin (Chattogram‑2), confirmed the development to Times of Bangladesh.
The court later set 28 April for the next hearing of the appeals, the lawyer added.
