Bangladesh Cricket Board director Asif Akbar apologised to football supporters on social media after facing days of heavy criticism for comments he made about the sport. The controversy began when Asif claimed that football activities were obstructing cricket due to stadium issues, and he even warned of physical confrontation if the problem was not resolved.
His remarks prompted strong reactions from footballers, organisers and supporters across the country. Many demanded an apology and warned of further action if he failed to do so. The Bangladesh Football Federation sent a formal letter to the BCB, and the situation escalated to the point that BCB president Aminul Islam Bulbul intervened, which helped ease tensions.
Asif later moved to clarify his comments, insisting that he had spoken out not out of hostility but in an effort to push for a solution that would benefit both sports. He said he hoped football and cricket would progress together rather than compete for resources.
Speaking during a Facebook Live session, Asif said, “While trying to sledge, I hurt football fans. I did it intentionally, and for that I have apologised. Those who love football and scolded me or got angry with me, I have taken no offence. There is no reason for me to. I wanted the issue to be discussed.”
Asif also suggested that his remarks ultimately led to productive conversations because the heads of both football and cricket came together. He noted that the BCB president attended Bangladesh’s match against Nepal at the national stadium on 13 November and that the two leaders held cordial discussions. “We have reached an understanding on how football and cricket can move forward together. I again apologise to football fans,” he said.
