The International Crimes Tribunal has issued arrest warrants against 24 people including former mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, and former minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak in a case filed over crimes against humanity.
The ICT-1 has taken cognisance of the formal charges against 28 accused in a case over the killing of nine people in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur during the July 2024 uprising.
Of the 28 accused, four are already in custody, while Taposh, Nanak, and the rest were declared fugitive and arrest warrants were issued against them. The tribunal led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumdar passed the order on Sunday.
The four arrestees are Naeemul Hasan Russell, president of Mohammadpur unit of banned Chhatra League (BCL); and its vice‑president Sajjad Hossain, Omar Faruk, and Fazle Rabbi.
The tribunal directed the authorities concerned to produce the fugitives on 29 January and later set the date for the next hearing.
Prosecution brought three charges against the accused in the crimes against humanity case committed allegedly during the July mass movement.
Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam read out portions of the charges before the tribunal on Sunday. During the hearing, he said that on 18 and 19 July last year Awami League, BCL, and law enforcement agencies carried out atrocities during the uprising. Following an investigation in the case, a report against 28 people was submitted, which was later scrutinised and filed as formal charges.
Tajul said, “Shots were fired at innocent students and the general public during the mass movement under the incitement, provocation, and direct or indirect presence of the accused. As a result, nine, including Mahmudur Rahman Soikat, were killed, and many others injured. We have sufficient evidence of this, along with 50 witnesses.”
Former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former additional DIG Proloy Kumar Joardar, and former joint commissioner of DMP Biplob Kumar Sarkar are among the accused.
