A Dhaka court has accepted the charge sheet submitted by the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) against 28 people in Tofazzal Hossain murder case.
The court also issued arrest warrants against 22 of the accused as they remain absconding.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana accepted the charge sheet and passed the order on Tuesday.
The accused are Jalal Mia, Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh, Al Hossain Sajjad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, Suman Mia, Wazibul Alam, Firoz Kabir, Abdus Samad, Sakib Raihan, Yasin Ali, Yamuzzaman alias Yam, Fazle Rabbi, Shahriar Kabir Shovon, Mehedi Hasan Imran, Ratul Hasan, Sultan Mia, Nasir Uddin, Mobashwer Billah, Shishir Ahmed, Mohsin Uddin alias Shafi, Abdullahil Kafi, Sheikh Ramzan Ali Rocky, Rashed Kamal Anik, Moniruzzaman Sohag, Abu Raihan, Redwanur Rahman Parvez, Rabbikul Riad, and Ashraf Ali Munshi.
Among them, Ahsan Ullah alias Bipul Sheikh and Wazibul Alam are out on bail, while Jalal Mia, Al Hossain Sajjad, Mottakin Sakin Shah, and Suman Mia are in jail. The remaining 22 accused are now on the run.
Sub-inspector Jinnat Ali said that the complainant, Mohammad Amanullah, had earlier said he would file a petition of no‑confidence against the charge sheet, but he did not submit it.
Earlier, on the night of 18 September 2024, Tofazzal, 32, was tortured in the guest room of Fazlul Huq Muslim Hall. A video circulated on social media showed him being fed rice before being beaten, with someone asking how he felt about eating. Around midnight, several students took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
On 19 September 2024, Amanullah, supervisor of the university’s estate office, filed a case at Shahbagh Police Station. After investigation, Inspector Md Asaduzzaman submitted a charge sheet to the court on 30 December that year, accusing 21 Dhaka University students.
Later, the university administration filed a no‑confidence petition, claiming the investigation was not properly conducted. Later Dhaka metropolitan magistrate ordered the PBI to reinvestigate. PBI later submitted a fresh charge sheet against 28 people including seven new accused.
