A fraudulent syndicate is using fake identities of military officers, including Brigadier General and Lieutenant Colonel ranks of the Bangladesh Army and DGFI, to intimidate ordinary people over mobile phones, authorities have warned.

The fraudsters are collecting pictures of uniformed military officers from various army websites and using them as WhatsApp profile pictures to gain trust before attempting to extort benefits, according to a statement issued by the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday.

“For everyone’s information, no such personal communication is made on behalf of the Bangladesh Army or any intelligence agency,” the statement read.

If any person claiming to be a high-ranking army officer attempts to intimidate or extort any benefit over phone or message, the public is requested to immediately inform the nearest law enforcement agency along with that person’s mobile number.

Everyone is urged to remain cautious about such fraudulent activities. Necessary actions are underway to bring the syndicate under the law, authorities added.
