The Appellate Division has stayed the High Court bail granted to former Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) MP Abdur Rahman Bodi in a case related to violence that took place in Bogura during the 2024 July Uprising.
A bench of the Appellate Division led by Senior Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order on Monday.
On 4 August 2024, violence erupted in Bogura amid the anti-discrimination movement. A case was subsequently filed over the incident.
Earlier on 26 February, a High Court bench comprising Justice Atwar Rahman and Justice Biswajit Debnath granted bail to Bodi. The state later challenged the order, filing an application with the Appellate Division seeking a stay.
On 5 March, Chamber Justice Md Rezaul Haque issued a stay and referred the matter to a regular bench for a full hearing, which culminated in Monday’s order.
Bodi was elected as an Awami League candidate from the Cox’s Bazar-4 (Ukhia-Teknaf) constituency in the 9th and 10th National Parliamentary elections.
He was arrested by RAB on 20 August 2024, from the Panchlaish area of Chattogram in connection with an attempted murder case in Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar.
Due to a corruption conviction, Awami League nominated his wife, Shahin Akhter, for the 11th and 12th parliamentary elections instead of Bodi. She won both times.
In August 2024, a separate case was filed at Teknaf Police Station against 33 people, naming Bodi as the main accused, over allegations of vandalism, looting, and attacks on business establishments in Teknaf. Teknaf Upazila Parishad Chairman Jafar Ahmed was also named as an accused.
The plaintiff, Mohammad Abdullah, finance secretary of Cox’s Bazar district BNP, filed a written complaint. Approximately 70 unidentified individuals were also made accused in that case.
