Heavy rainfall has pushed the Matamuhuri River above the danger level in Lama Upazila of Bandarban, creating flooding and landslide risks in low-lying areas, prompting the Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force to launch a public awareness campaign, according to a press release said. The initiative aims to reduce potential loss of life, property and disruption to local socio-economic activities.
Around 30 Village Defence Party (VDP) members are operating in high-risk areas of Lama Upazila on 06 July (Monday) under the direction of the Upazila Ansar and VDP officer. Using public address systems, they are urging residents to remain alert, avoid landslide-prone hill areas, limit unnecessary movement and follow instructions from local authorities.
The campaign also focuses on disaster preparedness messaging, discouraging rumours and encouraging residents to maintain communication with relevant authorities during emergencies. The members are delivering precautionary instructions to help reduce risk and safeguard lives and property.
The activities are intended to minimise disaster-related damage while helping maintain normal public life and supporting local economic activity, the statement said.
The Bangladesh Ansar and Village Defence Force said its members are regularly engaged in disaster response and awareness efforts, contributing to the protection of livelihoods, lives and property. It added that such initiatives also support economic stability, ensure safer conditions and contribute to broader socio-economic development in vulnerable areas.
