All 18 students of Peroli Dakhil Madrasa in Tularampur Union under Narail Sadar Upazila failed this year’s Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations, despite the institution having 17 teachers on its payroll.
Afra Dakhil Madrasa in Shekhati Union of the same upazila also recorded a zero pass rate, with none of its students clearing the exams.
The SSC results were published Monday. According to Jessore Education Board data, 8,262 students from Narail district sat for the exams this year. Of them, 404 secured GPA‑5 including 370 from the General Education Board, 16 from the Madrasah Education Board and 18 from the Technical Education Board.
Narail has 183 secondary schools, madrasahs and vocational institutions. Only Peroli Dakhil Madrasah and Afra Dakhil Madrasah recorded zero pass rates.
During a visit to Peroli Dakhil Madrasah on Tuesday morning, classes were found underway in all classrooms. The superintendent’s office is located on the upper floor of the two‑storey building.
Superintendent Ashraful Jamman said, “Although our results in previous years were good, this year’s outcome is extremely poor. We do have talented students among our examinees. We will organise a guardian meeting with all teachers present. For students whose marks are in doubt, applications for re‑scrutiny will be submitted. The actual situation will be clear only after that.”
Madrasah sources said Peroli Dakhil Madrasah was established in 1986, with students first appearing in SSC exams in 1990. It joined the Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme in 1993. The institution currently has 250 students and 17 teachers, including the superintendent. It achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in 2024, making this year’s results a major setback.
At Afra Dakhil Madrasah, the correspondent found the building in a dilapidated condition, with no teachers or students present. A local resident later brought Superintendent Atikur Rahman to the institution.
“I have been running this institution for a long time. As it has not been enlisted under the MPO scheme, the madrasah has now been closed down,” Rahman said.
Students and guardians have questioned the results and expressed disbelief.
Tushmi Khanm, a failed student, said, “I received a scholarship in Class 5 and always stood first. On my result sheet, I obtained GPA‑5 in all other subjects. I sat for the English exam and performed well, so I am highly surprised to be shown as failed. I will apply for re‑scrutiny. I believe my result will change.”
Ruma Begum, a guardian from Peroli village, said, “My daughter is a meritorious student. She has always secured first or second position. Her exams went well too. She has been shown as failed in English. This was not supposed to happen. It is not just her; all the students of the madrasah have been shown as failed.”
Narail District Education Officer Jamal Uddin confirmed that none of the students from Peroli and Afra Dakhil Madrasahs under the Madrasah Education Board passed this year.
He said he had recently joined his post and was holding exchange meetings with schools. Officials would visit the two institutions, discuss the results with teachers and students, and take necessary measures to improve performance in the future.
