Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed on Tuesday said AI-powered traffic cameras are now operational at 19 major intersections across the capital.
Four new locations were added on Tuesday, increasing the number from 15 to 19, while work is underway to install the technology at other key junctions.
He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after inaugurating the AI traffic camera system on Lake Road under the Tejgaon Traffic Division at the Tejgaon Traffic Deputy Commissioner’s Office.
The DMP commissioner said nearly 1,500 traffic cases have so far been filed using AI cameras. He said the amount of fines varies depending on the offence, while the Traffic Division maintains updated records of the total collections.
Replying to a question on battery-powered auto-rickshaws operating on city roads, he said the DMP continues its drive against the vehicles. However, he added that removing all battery-powered auto-rickshaws from Dhaka’s streets immediately is not possible.
He said the Ministry of Home Affairs and the DMP have adopted a policy decision regarding battery-powered auto-rickshaws. The DMP is now working with relevant stakeholders to implement the decision. Necessary measures will be introduced gradually under the coordinated plan.
Speaking about the AI-based traffic prosecution system, the commissioner said notices for traffic violations detected by AI cameras are sent not only through mobile messages but also by post to the registered owner’s address. SMS notifications are also sent from the designated DMP Traffic Division number. The prosecution details are published on the DMP Traffic Division website as well.
Responding to a question about notices reaching previous owners because vehicle ownership had not been transferred after sale, he said around 38,000 summons have so far been issued.
Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anisur Rahman, along with senior officials of the DMP and the Tejgaon Division, attended the programme.
