Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $115.8 million loan to improve water supply, drainage and green spaces in Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), aiming to strengthen climate resilience and urban services.
The Narayanganj Green and Resilient Urban Development Project will benefit at least 4,00,000 residents and support efforts to ease congestion in Dhaka, the lender said in a statement.
The project will upgrade drinking water systems, modernise drainage infrastructure and expand green public spaces, while also strengthening institutional capacity in NCC and local communities.
ADB Country Director Hoe Yun Jeong said improving urban services is critical as urbanisation accelerates and environmental risks intensify.
Investments in reliable water supply, resilient drainage and inclusive green spaces, combined with stronger institutions, will support productivity, economic growth and long-term human capital development, she said.
The project aims to reduce non-revenue water to below 20 per cent by replacing and expanding 230 kilometres of pipeline network, installing metered household connections and introducing district metered area systems.
It will also introduce digital technologies such as supervisory control and data acquisition systems and strengthen online billing and revenue collection.
NCC’s water supply capacity is expected to rise from 113 million litres per day to 162 million litres per day through new tube wells, rehabilitation of the existing treatment plant and upgrades to wells.
To reduce flooding and improve resilience to extreme weather, the project will raise the share of surface water use to 51 per cent and develop 22 kilometres of drainage infrastructure using nature-based solutions.
It will also build inclusive green parks and rehabilitate a playground to improve urban livability and reduce heat.
NCC will be responsible for the long-term operation and maintenance of the facilities.
ADB, founded in 1966, is a multilateral development bank with 69 members, including 50 from Asia and the Pacific, supporting sustainable and inclusive development across the region.
