Police recovered an abandoned grenade on Thursday during drain excavation in the Boro Kamalabari Paschimpara area of Kamalabari Union under Aditmari Upazila in Lalmonirhat.
Local resident Abdul Aziz, 75, found the grenade while cleaning a drain beside his house in the afternoon. After noticing the unusual object, he informed neighbours, who then alerted Aditmari Police Station.
Police later retrieved the grenade and took it to the station.
“At first I was unsure about what it was, but after digging further I realised it looked like a grenade. Freedom fighters used to take position in this area during the 1971 Liberation War, so it might have been left behind at that time,” Aziz said.
Aditmari Police Station officer-in-charge Ali Akbar said the grenade is initially thought to be from the Liberation War period and has been kept safely at the police station.
“It will be deactivated as per procedure,” he said.
A general diary has been filed over the incident.
