On Saturday morning, the 13 donation boxes of Kishoreganj’s historic Pagla Mosque were opened under tight security. What emerged was staggering: 43 sacks overflowing with cash, along with gold, silver ornaments, and foreign currency.
After a day-long counting process involving around 300 madrasa students, teachers and 130 officials from Rupali Bank, the final tally reached an astonishing Tk15.90 crore.
For many, the sight has become almost ritualistic. Every few months, the mosque’s iron donation chests reveal millions of taka, yet the scale never fails to amaze.
In December last year, the boxes yielded Tk11.78 crore after nearly four months. This time, the donations climbed even higher, reflecting the unwavering trust thousands of devotees place in the mosque.
People travel from across Bangladesh to offer prayers at Pagla Mosque. Many arrive carrying quiet hopes for recovery from illness, success in business, a child’s future or simply gratitude for blessings already received.
Their offerings, whether a few coins or bundles of notes, collectively create one of the country’s largest charitable collections.
According to the mosque management, the donations are used to operate the mosque complex, support madrasa education and orphan care, and finance a range of public welfare initiatives.
Standing on the banks of the Narsunda River, the three-domed mosque is not only an architectural landmark but also a symbol of centuries-old spiritual heritage.
Local folklore traces its name to Dewan Zilkadar Khan, affectionately known as “Pagla”, who is believed to have worshipped at the site nearly 500 years ago during the era of Isa Khan.
