Croatia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 32 with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Ghana on Sunday, while both teams advanced from Group L.
Petar Susic gave Croatia the lead in the first half after a dominant opening 45 minutes. Zlatko Dalic’s side controlled possession and created the better chances, with Luka Modric pulling the strings in midfield.
The match burst into life late in the second half. Ghana drew level through Derrick Luckassen after a VAR review confirmed the goal. It was the defender’s first goal on his debut for the Black Stars and briefly lifted Ghana into second place in the group.
Croatia responded immediately. Just minutes later, Modric delivered a dangerous corner and Nikola Vlasic powered a header into the net to restore Croatia’s lead in the 83rd minute.
Ghana pushed forward during seven minutes of added time, but Croatia defended strongly to protect their advantage. Modric also made a crucial defensive intervention in the closing moments as Ghana searched for another equaliser.
The victory saw Croatia finish second in Group L behind England, who beat Panama 2-0 to win the group. Ghana, who had already secured qualification before kick-off, finished third and also progressed to the knockout stage.
Croatia will now face the runners-up from Group K in Toronto, while Ghana will meet the Group K winners in Kansas City.
