After captivating local audiences earlier this year, Barua Sunanda Kakon’s English-language film ‘Dot’ is now heading overseas, marking a proud step for Bangladeshi independent cinema on the global map.
The film, which premiered in Bangladesh on September 5, will open at AMC Universal Studios in California on November 7, followed by screenings across 15 states in the US, according to the director.
Dot unfolds a poignant tale of love, resilience, and survival among riverside communities: people caught between nature’s beauty and the harsh realities of exploitation.
Centered around women’s struggles and the dark undercurrent of human trafficking, the film draws from true events, shaped through months of field research and interviews.
Director Kakon explained, “Dot is inspired by real lives. We wanted to tell a story that feels personal to Bangladesh but relatable anywhere in the world. That’s why we chose English, to speak directly to a broader audience without losing our essence.”
Produced by Barua Monojit Dhiman and Mohammad Delwar Hossain, Dot stars an ensemble of seasoned stage performers from Bangladesh’s Group Theatre movement, including Barua Monojit Dhiman, Misti Moni, Pari, Rajibul Islam, Sonia Parvin Shapla and Mostafizur Rahman.
Running 2 hours and 8 minutes, the film uses minimalist realism and human emotion to highlight how silent endurance becomes resistance.
