Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has arrested Monir Hossain (38), a notorious yaba godfather from Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar. He is the prime accused in the high-profile ‘Shahjahan murder case.’

Monir, a resident of Dhamnakhala village in Palongkhali Union, was arrested by a special team from BGB’s Balukhali Battalion-64 on Tuesday afternoon. The team carried out an operation in the Rahmat Bill area of Balukhali Union after receiving a tip-off about Monir’s whereabouts.

In a statement released that night, BGB officials revealed that Monir was reportedly planning to visit Rahmat Bill to settle a financial dispute linked to yaba trafficking. Upon receiving this information, BGB deployed a special team in the area. When Monir noticed the BGB presence and attempted to flee, he was pursued and arrested.

During initial interrogation, Monir admitted to his long-standing involvement in yaba trafficking and the drug trade in the border region. He also faces multiple arrest warrants for murder and drug-related offenses. Monir is the main accused in the Shahjahan murder case in Ukhiya and was a wanted fugitive in connection with the seizure of 9,600 yaba pills in November 2024.

Lieutenant Colonel Jasim Uddin, Commanding Officer (CO) of BGB’s 64th Battalion, stated, “While many couriers involved in yaba smuggling have been caught, the godfathers behind these operations have often remained elusive. Monir Hossain is one such godfather, and we’ve successfully apprehended him.”

The BGB CO confirmed that Monir will be handed over to Ukhiya police station after completing the legal process. “BGB’s crackdown on drugs is intensifying, and we will continue targeting godfathers in these operations,” he added.
