A 25-year-old youth died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Thursday morning after allegedly being mugged and pushed off a moving train in the capital’s Kurmitola area on Wednesday evening.

The deceased was identified as Hafizur Rahman, a resident of Char Chinguri village in Chitalmari upazila of Bagerhat district and son of the late Rahman Sheikh. He worked at a resort in Joydebpur, Gazipur, and was the father of a child.

According to the victim’s neighbour, Md Jewel, Hafizur had left Gazipur on Wednesday evening on leave to visit his village in Bagerhat. He was travelling along his regular route, taking a train from Joydebpur to Kamalapur in Dhaka before planning to board a bus from Sayedabad to Bagerhat.

His family was informed of his death by police on Thursday morning, after which relatives travelled to Dhaka and identified his body at DMCH.

Md Fayzullah, a pedestrian who rescued Hafizur, said he heard screams near the railway tracks beside Kurmitola Hospital around 6:30pm on Wednesday while returning home from work. He found Hafizur lying severely injured and bleeding beside the tracks, unable to speak. Fayzullah and several other passers-by rushed him first to Kurmitola Hospital, from where he was transferred to DMCH later that night.

Citing locals at the scene, Fayzullah said that snatchers on the roof of a Kamalapur-bound train had mugged Hafizur of his bag, mobile phone, and wallet before pushing him off the roof. Due to his critical condition, no statement could be recorded directly from the victim before he died.

Dhaka Railway Police Station (Kamalapur) Officer-in-Charge (OC) Joynal Abedin confirmed the youth’s identity and death while undergoing treatment.

However, police said that it has not yet been confirmed whether he was pushed off or how he fell, and the incident remains under investigation.

As of Thursday, no case had been filed in connection with the incident, and the body was sent to the DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
