Veteran Bandarban politician Proshanna Kanti Tanchangya passed away early Thursday while undergoing treatment at Imperial Hospital in Chattogram.

Born on November 16, 1953, in Tinkonia area of Farua Union under Bilaichhari Upazila, Rangamati district, he was the son of Satkamal Tanchangya and Fuleshwari Tanchangya. Following the loss of their homestead and land due to the Kaptai dam, his family was relocated to Bandarban.

Proshanna Kanti Tanchangya was a founding member of the Parbatya Chattogram Jana Samhati Samiti -PCJSS. Later, he became active in Awami League politics, serving as the president of the district Awami League.

In 1989, he was elected to the Bandarban Hill District Local Government Council (now Hill District Council) through direct elections. He also contested for the Member of Parliament seat from the 300th Bandarban constituency, which led to his expulsion from the Awami League.

Apart from his political career, Proshanna Kanti Tanchangya was the founding president of the Bangladesh Tanchangya Welfare Association.

On Thursday, his body will first be taken to his residence in the New Gulshan area of Bandarban town before being transported to his ancestral home in Satkamalpara for funeral prayers on Friday.
